The Reed or Kaur Festival celebrates and protects the unique culture of Bougainvilleans. The name of the festival the Reed or Kaur is taken from the local reeds or bamboo plant which has been used in making Bougainvilleans traditional musical instruments. The most significant of these are the bamboo panpipes and bamboo flutes. Cultural groups from each region of Bougainville will showcase their distinctive bamboo instruments with their traditional singing and dancing.
